What does God say about Abuse?
Scripture is full of passages condemning abuse, confronting the abuser, and comforting the afflicted. God’s word reveals the truth that abuse has no place in the Kingdom of God.
The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates everyone who loves violence.
Psalms 11: 5, NET/NLT
“…and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment” says the Lord Almighty.
Malachi 2: 16, NIV
You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted;
you encourage them and you listen to their cry,
defending the fatherless and the oppressed,
in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
Psalm 10: 17-18, NIV
He who brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind,
And the fool will be a servant to the wise.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.
Proverbs 11: 29-30, NIV
It is not enemies who taunt me – I could bear that;
It is not adversaries who deal insolently with me – I could hide from them.
But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend,
With Who I kept pleasant company;
We walked in the house of God with the throng…
My companion laid hands on a friend and violated a covenant with me
With speech smoother than butter, but with a heart set on war;
With words that were softer than oil, but in fact were drawn swords.
Psalms 55: 12-14, 20-21, NSRV
Husbands, love your wives, and never treat them harshly.
Colossians 3: 19, NLT
You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder,” and “Whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable of judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool” you will be liable to the hell of fire.
Matthew 5: 21-23, ESV
